How to measure pants
Lay the trousers flat, front up, smoothed but not stretched, and take eight measurements: waist, front rise, hip, thigh, knee, leg opening, inseam and outseam. Record each one to the nearest quarter inch.

Eight numbers describe a pair of trousers. Take them from the garment lying flat rather than from your own body and the figures hold still, whoever is holding the tape. Below: the definition used on this site for each point, the order to work in, the mistakes that quietly move a figure, and a way of recording the results that is still useful in six months.
What do you need before you start?
A tape measure that does not stretch. A cloth tape is fine when it is new, but an old cloth tape can gain length along its own life, so check it against a steel rule if you have one. You also need a hard flat surface wide enough to take a whole leg: a table or a floor, not a bed or a sofa cushion.
The trousers should be clean, dry and cool. Denim comes out of a hot dryer shorter than it went in and relaxes over the following hour, so a pair measured straight out of the machine will not match itself later. Leave a freshly washed pair lying flat for an hour first.
Work in inches, because almost every published bottoms specification is quoted in inches, and converting twice is where transcription errors get in. Record to the nearest quarter inch (0.25").
How should the pants be laid out?
Fold the trousers in half along the centre back seam so that one leg sits directly on top of the other, front facing up. Line the two inseams up with each other. Press the waistband flat and open without stretching the elastic or the waistband lining. Smooth each leg from the crotch downwards until the fabric lies without a wave in it, then stop touching the garment.
Pulling fabric taut adds length at every point and is the largest single reason two careful people get different numbers from the same pair of trousers. The tape should lie on the fabric, not drag it.
What are the eight points of measure?
These are the definitions used on this site. Brands do not always use the same ones, which is why the drop distances below should be written down alongside the figure rather than assumed.

What are the steps, in order?
- Lay and align — fold along the centre back seam, front up, inseams stacked, waistband flat and open.
- Waist — measure straight across the top edge of the waistband, side seam to side seam. Do not follow the curve of a contoured waistband; flatten it first.
- Front rise — start at the top of the waistband at the centre front and follow the fly curve down to the crotch seam. Stand the tape on edge so it can follow the curve without lifting.
- Hip or seat — pick a drop below the waistband, measure straight across, and write the drop down. A hip figure without its drop cannot be compared with anything.
- Thigh — measure across the leg 1" below the crotch seam, at right angles to the inseam rather than square to the table edge.
- Knee — measure across the leg at your chosen drop below the crotch seam, again at right angles to the inseam, and record the drop.
- Leg opening — measure across the hem edge to edge. If the hem is cuffed, measure the cuff as it is worn and note that it is cuffed.
- Inseam — measure from the crotch seam straight down the inside leg seam to the hem, keeping the leg flat and unstretched.
- Outseam — measure from the top of the waistband down the outside seam to the hem.
- Check — rise plus inseam should land near the outseam. A large discrepancy usually means the rise or the inseam was taken from the wrong start point, so take both again.
Which mistakes change the number most?
Each of these produces a figure that looks plausible on the page.
- Stretching as you measure. Knit and elastane blends will give you almost any number you want. The tape lies on the fabric; the fabric does not move.
- Measuring the waist over a curved waistband. The tape follows the curve and reads long. Flatten the waistband first.
- Confusing front rise with back rise. Back rise is longer on nearly every cut. If a chart does not say which one it quotes, treat the figure as unverified.
- Running the inseam down the outside of the leg. That is the outseam, and it will be longer by roughly the rise.
- Not recording the drop — used for hip and knee. Two honest measurements taken at different drops disagree for no useful reason.
- Measuring square to the table — instead of at right angles to the inseam. On a tapered leg the two are not the same line.
- Measuring a garment on a hanger. The weight of the fabric lengthens the leg and narrows the hip.
- Measuring warm out of the dryer. Give the garment an hour lying flat.
How should you record the eight numbers?
Record the garment, not just the numbers. Brand, style code, size on the label, colourway, and the date you measured. A flat measurement with no style code attached to it cannot be reused, because you will never know later which garment produced it.

Across those eight specifications, stated manufacturing tolerance runs about ±0.3" to ±0.8", widest on garment-dyed stock. The consequence carries over: a published figure is the centre of a range, not a promise, and two pairs of the same style can differ without either being faulty. It is also why a quarter inch is enough precision.
Why do two pairs marked the same size measure differently?
Because a size label names a position in a brand's range, not a dimension. The clearest case in the data held here is not trousers but tees, where the same letter covers very different garments: a ladies' Gildan G500L Medium publishes a 17.5" chest while the unisex Mediums held here publish 20.0" to 20.5", a 3.0" gap on the same letter, and the same 3.0" gap again at Large (published specification, retrieved 27 July 2026).
Nothing about waistband labelling prevents the same drift. A stated 32 waist is a name; the flat waist measurement you just took is the fact. The photo scanner reads a shirt laid flat beside a scale card and returns its flat measurements. Roughly half of those readings land within an inch of a tape, sleeve opening and bicep are the least reliable points, and anything the scanner cannot read confidently is left blank rather than guessed.
