A men's pants size chart maps a two-number label onto inches: waist first, inseam second. A pair marked 34 x 32 claims a 34 inch waist and a 32 inch inside leg. Both figures describe the garment, and both are set by the brand rather than by a shared standard.
That is the whole convention. Everything difficult about trouser sizing comes from what the two numbers leave out: rise, thigh, leg opening, and how much the brand rounded the waist in your favour.
What does W x L mean on trousers?
W is waist. L is length, and length here always means inseam, never the outside leg and never the finished garment height. The two numbers are read in that order on almost every US and UK men's trouser label.

Sizes usually run in even waists and even inseams. A brand that stocks 30 to 40 in the waist and 30, 32 and 34 in the leg is offering a grid, not a continuum, and your true measurement lands between two boxes more often than not. Some ranges add odd waists; many do not. Check the brand's own stocked list before assuming a 33 exists.
What does the waist number actually measure?
On a size chart the waist is a circumference in inches. On the garment it is normally taken flat, so the tape reading is half the circumference and gets doubled. Measure across the top of the waistband from one side seam to the other with the trousers buttoned and pressed flat, then multiply by two.

Two things break that tidy arithmetic. Stretch waistbands read short flat and relax open on the body, so the flat reading understates them. Trousers that sit low on the hip carry their waistband below the natural waist, so a garment waist of 34 inches is not measuring the same place on you as a tailor's tape at your navel. When a chart offers both a garment waist and a body waist column, they are different quantities and the difference is the ease the brand designed in.
What does the inseam number measure?
Inseam is the inside leg: the seam that runs from the crotch join to the bottom of the hem. It is the single most useful trouser number because it is the one you can verify against a pair that already fits, and because it says nothing about waist, so it transfers between brands more reliably than the waist does.
Measure it on a pair laid flat with one leg folded aside, tape from the crotch seam straight down the inside of the leg to the hem edge. The flat-measuring discipline is the one we set out for tops in how to measure a shirt: square the garment, keep the tape unstretched, and read the same point twice before trusting it.
Rise, the distance from crotch seam to the top of the waistband, is not on the label at all. Two pairs sharing a 34 x 32 label can differ in rise by more than an inch, which is why one sits at your waist and the other at your hip while both claim the same size.
How do you read a brand's own pants size chart?
- Find out which body it describes — a chart headed "body measurements" tells you the wearer it was drafted for; a chart headed "garment measurements" tells you the trousers themselves. Never compare one to the other.
- Measure a pair that already fits — waist across the band and doubled, inseam down the inside leg. These two numbers are your reference, not the size printed inside the pair.
- Match the measurement, not the label — look for the row whose garment waist and inseam match your reference. If the brand publishes only body measurements, expect the garment to be cut with ease on top of them.
- Check the tolerance line — most makers allow the cut piece to vary. Published specs in our own data carry stated tolerances of roughly plus or minus 0.3" to 0.8" depending on the fabric and finishing, and garment-dyed cloth sits at the wider end because dyeing shrinks it.
- Round toward the fixable dimension — a leg that is 1" long can be hemmed. A waist that is 1" tight cannot be argued with.
Why does the same waist size fit differently between brands?
Because the number on the label is a target the pattern was cut to, not a distance the brand guarantees. How much ease a pattern adds over the stated waist is decided brand by brand and fit by fit, so two pairs both marked 34 can finish at different measurements without either label being wrong. Across eight published blank specifications retrieved 27 July 2026, a ladies' cut Gildan G500L in Medium publishes a 17.5" flat chest while unisex Mediums publish 20.0" to 20.5". That is a three inch gap on garments that share a single letter, and it repeats at Large. The letter, like the waist number, names a category the brand chose, not a distance.
The practical consequence for trousers is the same one that holds for shirts. A size that fits in one brand predicts almost nothing in another until you have the measurement behind it.
Does ShirtMath hold trouser measurements?
No, and this page deliberately does not print a ShirtMath trouser table. Our verified measurement data today is shirts: a garment photographed flat with a scale card, read into flat measurements, and matched against published garment measurements across the catalogue. About half of readings land within an inch of a real tape, sleeve opening and bicep are the least reliable, and anything the scanner cannot read confidently is left blank rather than guessed.
Bottoms follow the same rule at the catalogue level. Where a listing carries no published waist or inseam, that item is excluded from fit matching instead of being filled in with a plausible figure. An invented waist would rank items as confidently as a real one, and the reader would have no way to tell the two apart. How we treat missing fields is set out in our methodology.
