ONE MEASUREMENT, EIGHT PUBLISHED RUNS

Shirt size calculator

Measure a t-shirt you already own across the chest and this returns the nearest published size in eight real blank runs, plus whether you landed on a size or between two. If you have no shirt to hand, the second mode will estimate from height and weight — less well, and it says so.

Where to measure a shirt for this calculator: chest, pit seam to pit seam A shirt laid flat with a dashed line straight across the chest, one inch below the armholes, from one pit seam to the other. PIT SEAM PIT SEAM CHEST · PIT TO PIT

Enter a chest measurement and all eight published runs are searched at once. With JavaScript off, the two tables below are this same lookup, printed.

Chest and body length across every published run

These are the 53 specification rows the calculator searches, printed. Chest is the flat width across the front; double it for the circumference inside the garment. Sleeve is deliberately absent, for a reason worth its own section below.

Read across a row and the problem with letter sizing is visible: a Medium is 20.0" in five runs, 20.5" in two, and 17.5" in the ladies’ cut of the same Gildan shirt. That last gap is 3" flat, 6" of circumference, inside one letter. Vanity sizing is how those decisions drifted apart.

Two brands publish sleeve length. They do not mean the same thing.

There is no sleeve column in the tables above, and leaving it out is the honest choice rather than a gap. Here is the evidence, from our own specification rows, at one single size:

Published sleeve length at size M (inches)
StylePublished sleeve, size MWhat the tape is doing
Champion T525C18.0Centre back of neck, across the shoulder, down the arm
Gildan G50017.0Centre back of neck, across the shoulder, down the arm
Gildan 540017.0Centre back of neck, across the shoulder, down the arm
Bella+Canvas 3001C8.5Shoulder seam, down the outside fold, to the cuff edge
Next Level 36008.5Shoulder seam, down the outside fold, to the cuff edge
Comfort Colors C40178.5Shoulder seam, down the outside fold, to the cuff edge
Hanes 5250T8.38Shoulder seam, down the outside fold, to the cuff edge

Gildan’s G500 lists 17.0" and Hanes’ 5250T lists 8.38" for a sleeve at the same size M. Neither is wrong. They are measuring different distances and publishing them under the same word: one starts at the centre of the back of the neck and travels across the shoulder before it reaches the arm, the other starts where the shoulder seam meets the sleeve. Roughly a factor of two, in a column most size charts label simply “sleeve”.

Put those in one table and you publish a comparison that is false. So this calculator does not use sleeve, and the tables above do not show it. If you want to compare sleeves across brands, you first have to know which convention each one used, which is what how to measure sleeve length is for.

What the calculator is doing

No model, no fitted curve, no learned mapping from bodies to garments. It holds the 53 published rows above, subtracts your chest measurement from each published chest, and reports the nearest one along with how far off it was. Three verdicts are possible.

VerdictWhen it firesWhat it prints
MEASURED-SPEC MATCHWithin 0.5" of a published chest in that runThe size, its published chest and length, your error
BETWEEN SIZESEquidistant sizes, or the nearest is over 0.5" away inside the runBoth neighbours and the gap to each
OUT OF RANGEOver 0.5" past either end of the runThe end size, its chest, and the distance past it

The half-inch window tracks the brands’ own stated variance — ±0.3" on seven of these styles, ±0.8" on the garment-dyed C4017. Inside that window a spec sheet and your tape do not disagree in any way you could act on. Outside it, they do, and it says so rather than rounding you into a purchase. Body length and shoulder, if you enter them, are only ever used to confirm or contradict the chest answer; they never override it.

Why height and weight cannot pick a shirt size

Height and weight describe a body. A size chart describes a garment. Between the two sits wearing ease — how much air the pattern maker left — and that is a style decision no body measurement can recover.

The gap is measurable in the tables above. Most runs grade 2.0" of flat chest per letter, which is 4" of circumference; the Next Level 3600 steps 1.5" up to Large, and the ladies’ G500L steps 1.0" then 1.5". Two people at identical height and weight routinely differ by more than a full step across the chest. That is why the second mode returns a band of three letters and prints the span of published inches they cover, instead of one letter it cannot justify. The centre of that band comes from a weight table we chose; it is a convention, and it is the only number in this tool that is not a published specification.

Now that the numbers above are in front of you, this is the useful moment to run one:

Common questions

How do I find my shirt size?
Measure a shirt you already own and like the fit of, rather than measuring yourself. Lay it flat, run a tape straight across the chest one inch below the armholes, seam to seam, and put that number into the calculator above. It returns the nearest published size in each of eight blank runs. This works because the shirt you like already encodes your preferred ease, which a body measurement cannot. If you have no shirt to hand, the second mode estimates from height and weight, but it answers with a band of three letters, not one.
Is pit to pit the same as chest?
On a size chart, yes — the chest column is the pit to pit width, taken straight across the front of the garment lying flat, one inch below the armholes. It is not the same as your chest, which is a circumference measured around you. A shirt with a 20" pit to pit is roughly 40" around inside, so halve a body chest before comparing it, or double the flat one. Pit to pit measurement covers it in full.
What size is 22 inch pit to pit?
A Large, in all seven unisex runs here. The Gildan G500, Hanes 5250T, Bella+Canvas 3001C, Champion T525C, Gildan 5400 and Next Level 3600 all publish exactly 22.0" at Large, and the Comfort Colors C4017 publishes 22.5", which is inside the half-inch match window. The exception is the ladies’ Gildan G500L, where 22.0" falls exactly between XL at 21.0" and 2XL at 23.0". A 22" flat shirt is about 44" around inside.
Why does my size change between brands?
Because a letter is a decision each brand makes on its own, and nothing obliges two brands to agree. In the eight runs here a Medium is 20.0" flat in five, 20.5" in two, and 17.5" in the ladies’ cut — and that last is the same manufacturer as the first. Grading differs too: most runs add 2.0" of chest per letter, the Next Level 3600 adds 1.5" up to Large. Measure the garment and the letter stops mattering. Vanity sizing is the longer story.
What size shirt am I if my chest is 42 inches?
Forty-two inches is a body measurement, and every number here is a garment measurement. Halved, 21.0" is not a published chest in any of these eight runs. In five of the seven unisex styles it sits squarely between Medium at 20.0" and Large at 22.0", an inch from each. In the Next Level 3600 and the Comfort Colors C4017 it is half an inch over their 20.5" Medium, which is inside the match window, so the calculator calls those a Medium. In the ladies’ G500L it is exactly XL. Note what a 21.0" flat shirt actually is: 42" around, your body, with no ease at all.
What if I am between sizes?
It says so and names both neighbours instead of rounding. At 2.0" of flat chest per letter the candidates are four inches apart in circumference: the smaller wears closer, the larger roomier, which is a direction rather than a correct answer. Length is graded alongside chest, so the larger letter is also about an inch longer. And the C4017’s published ±0.8" is two fifths of a size step, so a quarter-inch preference is not worth defending.
