How should a t-shirt fit?
Fit is four measurements in a fixed order of importance, not a feeling. Here is what each one should do, and how to check it against a shirt you already reach for.

Four garment measurements decide it: the shoulder seam sits on the bony corner of your shoulder, the chest is wide enough to move in without hanging in folds, the hem still covers your waistband when your arms go up, and the sleeve ends where you meant it to. Getting all four right means measuring a t-shirt you already reach for and shopping against its numbers, plus or minus the inches you would change.
How a t-shirt should fit: the four numbers
ShirtMath measures tops at eight points; these four carry weights of 0.28, 0.20, 0.16 and 0.12, or 76% of the fit comparison before hem sweep, bicep, sleeve opening and neck count at all. All are flat measurements: chest one inch below the armholes seam to seam, length from the high point of the shoulder to the hem, shoulder seam to seam across the back, sleeve from the shoulder seam to the cuff edge.
The shoulder seam decides the rest
Run a finger along your shoulder until it drops off the bony corner into your arm. The seam belongs there. Outboard of it the sleeve head hangs on your upper arm; inboard, the seam drags toward the neck and reaching forward pulls the back panel.
Shoulders come first because they are the one dimension an alteration cannot fix cheaply. Chest and waist are side-seam work and length is a hem, but narrowing a shoulder means detaching both sleeves, recutting the shoulder line and resetting two armholes. Sizing up does not help evenly either.

A step buys 2.0″ of chest and about 1.0″ of shoulder. Sizing up for chest room is usually the right trade; sizing up to relieve a tight shoulder overshoots the chest by an inch nobody asked for. Published shoulder figures also deserve suspicion. The Hanes 5250T publishes 17.25″ at S rising by exactly 2.0″ a size to 31.25″ at 5XL, against a 32.0″ flat chest. That is arithmetic, not a garment.
Chest: ease measured against a shirt you own
How much room your chest needs depends on your body; no spec sheet can tell you that. What it can tell you is how far one shirt sits from another. Take the flat chest of the tee you like and read every candidate as a difference. Flat widths double, so half an inch flat is a full inch around you.

So there are no half sizes. An inch tight, and the next size up is two inches flat and four around: you have traded pulling for hanging. The fix is a different style at the same letter, and the t-shirt size chart has seven unisex styles agreeing within 0.5″ above Small.
Length: the waistband and the seat
Test length in motion. Arms down, the hem covers the waistband; arms overhead, it still does. A shirt that clears your belt only while you stand still is short. Past the middle of the seat it stops reading as a t-shirt. A shirt you mean to tuck needs more again: a hem stopping at the waistband works its way out.
Length grades about 1.0″ per size where chest grades 2.0″. Unisex tees start at 28.0″ in S, split at 2XL into 32.0″ for both Gildans, the 3001C and the 3600 against 33.0″ for the T525C, 5250T and C4017, and reach 33.0–34.0″ at 3XL. Cut moves length further than brand does: the ladies’ G500L Medium is 26.0″ where unisex Mediums are 29.0–29.5″, the drift vanity sizing documents in numbers.
Sleeves: where the hem lands
A short sleeve should end between mid-bicep and just above the elbow, the opening clearing your arm without leaving a mark. A long sleeve should end at the wrist bone, covering the joint while the hand still moves. Both are endpoints on your arm: a sleeve number means nothing until you know where the tape started. Two conventions sit side by side in published specs. At Medium the 3001C, 3600 and C4017 publish 8.5″ and the 5250T 8.38″, while the Gildan G500 publishes 17.0″ and the Champion T525C 18.0″ for the same kind of short sleeve.
Too small and too big, by symptom

Too big is under-diagnosed because it is comfortable. A dropped seam and folds at the side seam are as much a fit failure as a strained button; they simply do not hurt. The tighter half is in is my shirt too small.
Dress shirts: the same four numbers, less forgiveness
A woven dress shirt has no stretch to absorb an error, so the four numbers apply with tighter tolerances and a stricter shoulder rule: a set-in sleeve on a woven body shows a misplaced seam immediately. Crossing your arms should not pull the placket into horizontal lines. When it does, the chest or waist is short of what your body needs: a fit failure, not a slim cut.

Compare in inches: the ShirtMath method

- Compare number by number not letter to letter. Length breaks a tie on chest, and the stated ±0.3–0.8″ variance means no decision should turn on a quarter inch.
