How to know if a t-shirt is too small

Four mirror checks, each traced to a single measurement — shoulder, chest, length, bicep — with published numbers for how much room one size up actually buys.

Stand in front of a mirror and check four things: a shoulder seam climbing up toward your neck, pull lines radiating across the chest, a hem that lifts when you raise your arms, and sleeves that bite into your upper arms. That is how to know if a t-shirt is too small — each sign traces to exactly one measurement: shoulder, chest, length, or bicep. In the size runs ShirtMath holds published specs for, one size up adds 1.5–2" of flat chest — roughly 3–4" of room around you — and about 1" of length, so knowing which measurement is short tells you whether one step fixes it.

How to know if a t-shirt is too small: the four checks

1. The shoulder seam rides up the shoulder

On a shirt that fits, the shoulder seam ends at the bump of bone at the outer edge of your shoulder. Too small, and the seam stops inboard of that bone, the sleeve head is dragged up onto the shoulder cap, and creases fan out from the armhole. The measurement is shoulder, seam to seam, across the back. One size buys different amounts by cut: a Gildan G500 goes from 17.74" at M to 18.76" at L, about an inch; a Hanes 5250T jumps from 19.25" to 21.25" — a full 2". Shoulder is the least forgiving miss — fabric give cannot move a seam past bone — so when this check fails, go up a size or to a wider cut.

2. Pull lines across the chest

Look for horizontal strain lines between the armpits — on a button-front shirt, X-shaped wrinkles tugging at each button; on a tee, side seams bowing forward and fabric printing the shape of your torso. The mechanism is arithmetic: a chest measurement is a flat width, and doubling it gives the circumference inside — a tee measuring 20" pit to pit holds about 40" around. A chest much bigger than that keeps the cloth permanently under load, and loaded knit shows it as lines. One size adds 1.5–2" of flat width in the runs below — 3–4" of circumference.

3. The hem lifts when you raise your arms

Raise both arms overhead. Every shirt rides up; one with enough length drops back to your waistband, one without stays perched above it. The related standing check: the hem sits at your belt before you move, or climbs and bunches when you sit. The measurement is body length, HPS to hem — highest point of the shoulder seam straight down. One size typically adds an inch: a G500 specs 29" at M, 30" at L. Some steps give more — a Champion T525C gains 2", from 31" to 33", between XL and 2XL.

4. The sleeve digs into your bicep

If the sleeve hem grips your arm and leaves a line on the skin when you pull the shirt off, the bicep is short — measured across the sleeve 1" below the armhole, laid flat. One size adds surprisingly little here: a G500 goes from 7.32" at M to 8.03" at L, about 0.7" flat — 1.4" around the arm — while dragging the chest up 2" and the length 1" along with it. If the arm is the only problem, changing cuts beats sizing up: at the same size M, a Comfort Colors C4017 specs an 8.05" bicep against the G500’s 7.32". How much bigger should you go?

One failing check usually means one size step. Here is what a step is, in published spec, for the most common case — a Gildan G500 from M to L:

The chest step holds across brands. The same M-to-L move, in flat chest width, for every style ShirtMath holds specs for:

So a size step is 1.5–2" of flat chest almost everywhere — the exception is the small end of the ladies’ run, where a G500L gains only 1" from S to M. Two failing checks at once usually means two sizes, or a different cut. And check that the problem is the shirt: across these eight styles, size M spans 17.5–20.5" of chest — a 3" spread inside one letter, almost all of it between the ladies’ cut and the unisex cuts. “M is too small” often means “this M is a different garment”; vanity sizing is the history of why the letter drifted.

The reverse: signs it’s too big

Run the same checks in the other direction. The shoulder seam falls past the bone onto your upper arm. The chest hangs in loose vertical folds instead of pulling in horizontal lines — strain makes lines across, slack makes folds down. The hem reaches toward mid-fly. The sleeve opening floats wide of your arm. None of these has a single correct threshold — where roomy becomes sloppy is preference, which is what how a shirt should fit is about. The practical asymmetry: too big can be tapered by a tailor; too small cannot be let out, because a knit tee has no seam allowance to give.

Stop diagnosing in the mirror; measure once

The checks above tell you which measurement failed. The long-term fix is knowing your numbers: take the best-fitting shirt you own and measure it at all eight points — one flat-lay session replaces every future mirror session, because any published spec can then be compared against it directly. Common questions

Should I size up if I'm between sizes?
First find out which measurement puts you between. A chest step is 1.5–2" of flat width in the published runs above — 3–4" of circumference — so sizing up on chest buys a lot of room; whether you want it depends on the ease you prefer. If only length or shoulder is between, the bigger size drags the chest along by up to 2". The reliable method: measure a shirt that already fits and compare its numbers to the garment’s published numbers, not to its letter.
Do t-shirts shrink in the wash?
Cotton tees shrink, mostly in length, and mostly in the first hot wash and tumble dry. The mechanism: knitting and finishing leave the fabric under tension, and heat, water, and agitation let the fibers relax back toward their unstressed state, so the loops pack closer together. ShirtMath does not publish shrink percentages because the brand specs it carries do not state them — published measurements describe the shirt before washing, and a hot dryer will take some length out of a cotton tee. Cold wash and hang dry keep it closest to spec.
Can you stretch out a shirt that's too small?
Not usefully. The blank styles specced in ShirtMath’s catalog are listed at zero stretch — plain cotton jersey — and the places a small shirt fails first, the shoulder seam and armhole, are locked by stitching that does not give. Strain shows up as pull lines, not as new room. Wet-stretching a knit gains fractions of an inch and relaxes back with the next wash. A chest short by an inch or more is a full size step of a problem; go up a size or change cuts.

Not sure which measurement is the problem? Photograph the shirt. The scanner reads one photo of a shirt laid flat and returns one number per measurement, in inches and cm — anything it cannot read confidently is left blank rather than guessed. About half of readings land within an inch of a real tape, so treat them as a guide and check anything that matters. Sleeve opening and bicep are the least reliable.
