Virtusize vs ShirtMath

Virtusize and ShirtMath answer the fit question the same way: compare a garment you already own against the one you are considering, rather than scanning your body. The differences are about where each tool runs and which measurements it reads.

Of everything in this comparison section, Virtusize is the closest thing to ShirtMath in method. Both start from the garment in your wardrobe rather than from your body, and that is a real and considered choice on both sides, not a workaround.

What do Virtusize and ShirtMath have in common?

They share the premise. The most reliable reference a shopper already has is a garment that fits, and the honest way to use it is to compare it with the garment being considered. Neither approach asks you to stand in front of a camera in your underwear.

That premise carries a second implication both tools accept: a size letter is not a measurement. Once you are comparing two garments, the letter on the label stops doing any work and the numbers on the two items do all of it. Anyone building fit tooling this way has already agreed that "Medium" is a name, not a dimension.

It is worth saying plainly, because most fit technology does the opposite. Body-scanning approaches try to model the shopper and then predict the garment. Garment-first approaches measure two things that both physically exist. What does Virtusize publicly describe itself as doing?

Virtusize is a commercial fit service sold to retailers and installed on the retailer's own product pages. Its public positioning centres on letting a shopper compare an item they already own against the item shown on the page, so the comparison is garment against garment.

That is as far as we will go. We have not tested the product, we have no access to how its recommendations are produced, and we are not going to characterise its pricing, its data sources, its coverage or its limits from the outside. If you want those details, they belong to Virtusize and you should read them there. Pages that invent a competitor's weaknesses are not comparisons, they are advertisements.

What does ShirtMath do today?

ShirtMath is pre-launch, and the live capability is narrow on purpose. You photograph a shirt laid flat with a scale card in frame. The scanner returns that shirt's flat measurements. Those measurements are matched against published garment specifications across the catalogue we hold, so the output is a list of garments whose published numbers sit close to the shirt you already wear.

The limits belong in the same paragraph. Roughly half of scanner readings land within an inch of a tape measure. Sleeve opening and bicep are the least reliable readings we take. Anything the scanner cannot read confidently is left blank rather than filled in with a guess. There is no body scanning, no shoe sizing from a photograph and no eyewear measurement from a photograph. The methodology page sets out how the matching works.

The row that matters most is the second one. A retailer-side tool answers "does this specific product fit me" on the page where you are already standing. A site-side tool answers "which products anywhere in this catalogue match the shirt I own". Those are different questions, and neither is a lesser version of the other.

When Virtusize is the better choice

  1. You are already on a product page that has it — a retailer-side tool is reading that retailer's own product data for that exact item. That is closer to the source than any third party's copy of the same figures, and you should use it.
  2. The garment is not in our catalogue — ShirtMath is pre-launch and holds a finite set of garment specifications. If the item you want is not among them, we have nothing to compare your shirt against and a tool sitting on the retailer's own page will beat us on that item.
  3. You want the answer without leaving checkout — an on-page widget stays inside the purchase flow. Opening a second site to scan a shirt is a heavier action, and for a single item it may not be worth it.
  4. You are a retailer, not a shopper — if the requirement is an on-page fit tool for your own catalogue, that is the market Virtusize sells into. Our equivalent work lives under size chart integration, and it is a different shape of product.

Where ShirtMath earns its place is the reverse case: you own a shirt that fits, you do not yet know what to buy, and you want to search across garments rather than validate one. That is a search problem, not a product-page problem.

Why compare garments instead of bodies?

Here is the clearest case we hold for why the garment has to be the unit of comparison. These are all size Medium.

The ladies' cut publishes 17.5" at Medium. That is 2.5" narrower than the Gildan unisex Medium and 3.0" narrower than the Next Level 3600 Medium, on the same letter. At Large the gap against the Gildan unisex body is 3.0" again. No size chart, no body model and no recommendation engine can reconcile that by reasoning about the shopper, because the difference is not in the shopper. It is in the garment. This is the mechanism behind vanity sizing, and it is why both Virtusize and ShirtMath start where they do.

Notice also that the two unisex Mediums differ from each other by only a half inch, while the ladies' Medium sits inches away from both. The interesting variation in sizing is rarely between brands of the same cut. It is between cuts wearing the same letter, which is exactly the case a body-first model has the least purchase on.

What can neither approach fix?

Published specifications are targets, not promises. Manufacturing tolerance on these figures runs roughly plus or minus 0.3" to 0.8", and garment-dyed styles such as the C4017 carry the wider end of that band because dyeing after construction moves the fabric. A published 20.0" chest describes the style, not the particular unit in the box.

That tolerance applies whichever tool you use. It is the reason we treat a match as a shortlist rather than a verdict, and the reason we would rather show you the numbers than a confidence score built on top of them. Is ShirtMath a Virtusize alternative?
Only partly. Virtusize is publicly described as a service retailers install on their own product pages, so it appears where a retailer has chosen to put it. ShirtMath is a site you use yourself, against the garment specifications it holds. If you are standing on a product page that already carries Virtusize, it is not something ShirtMath replaces.
Does Virtusize measure your body?
Virtusize publicly describes its comparison as being against an item the shopper already owns rather than a body scan. That is the same starting point ShirtMath uses. Anything beyond what Virtusize documents publicly is not something we can verify from outside, so we do not state it.
Which is more accurate, Virtusize or ShirtMath?
