Body measurement vs garment measurement
Body measurement starts with your body and adds an assumed ease allowance to reach a size. Garment measurement starts with a garment you already trust and compares it to published product numbers. Both can work, and they fail in different places.

What is the difference between body measurement and garment measurement?
Body measurement sizes the person. It collects dimensions from you, chest circumference above all, then applies an ease model to decide which garment those dimensions belong in. Ease is the gap the cut intends between your body and the cloth around it.
Garment measurement sizes the object. It takes flat measurements from a garment you already own and already trust, then compares them against the published measurements of a candidate product. No model of your body is involved, because your body is represented by the shirt that already fits it.
Both schools are legitimate. They differ in what they ask you to supply, what they are able to know, and what they quietly assume when they cannot know something. That last part is where most sizing failures come from.
What does body measurement need from you?
Three things, and the third one is rarely visible to the shopper.
- Accurate body numbers — a chest circumference taken level, at the fullest point, with the tape snug and not pulled tight. Whether you measure over a layer of clothing or against skin changes the figure, so the convention has to stay constant between the measurement and the size chart that reads it.
- A size chart that is built on body numbers — many brands publish body charts, many publish garment charts, and some publish both on the same page without labelling which is which. Reading a garment chart as a body chart, or the reverse, produces an error larger than most measuring mistakes.
- A model of ease — the assumed allowance between your chest and the garment's chest. A fitted cut and a boxy cut can be built for the same body and differ by several inches of finished circumference. The shopper almost never sees the number the brand used.
When all three hold, body measurement is genuinely useful, and it is the only route available when you own nothing comparable. When the ease model is hidden, it becomes a recommendation you cannot audit.
What does garment measurement need from you?
Two things, both of them concrete.
- A garment you already trust — one shirt whose fit you would repeat. It carries your ease preference inside it, already resolved, without anyone having to model it.
- Published product numbers for the candidate — a flat chest, a body length, ideally a sleeve length, from the manufacturer's own specification. Without them there is nothing to compare against and the method has nothing to say.
The measuring convention has to match on both sides. Flat chest is taken across the garment laid flat, just below the armhole seams, so the finished circumference is twice that figure. Why does a body number alone not settle a size?
Because the letter on the label is not a dimension, and the same letter is attached to different garments. Here are published flat chest figures for eight blank styles, all at the same four letters.

Read the Medium column. The unisex Mediums cluster at 20.0" and 20.5". The ladies G500L Medium publishes 17.5". That is a 3" gap on the same letter, and it widens to 3.5" at Large, where the ladies cut publishes 19.0" against 22.0" to 22.5" for the unisex styles. "Medium" names a different garment depending on the cut, so a body chest figure cannot resolve to a letter until you know which cut is being sized.
The arithmetic makes the point sharper. A 20.0" flat chest is a 40.0" finished circumference. If your own chest measures 40", that garment gives you no ease at all at the chest. The G500L Medium at 17.5" flat is a 35.0" circumference, smaller than that body. Same letter, opposite outcome. Body length at Medium is 29.0" for the unisex styles here, with C4017 the longest at 29.5", so the vertical proportions shift under the same letter too.
One more caution before anyone treats the table as gospel. Manufacturing tolerance on published specifications runs roughly plus or minus 0.3" to 0.8". C4017 is garment-dyed and carries the wider end of that band. A half-inch difference between two published figures is inside the noise; a 3" difference is not. Judge gaps against the tolerance, not against the decimal place. Where does each method break?
Body measurement
It breaks when the ease model is wrong or invisible. Two brands with identical body charts can cut to different finished measurements, and the shopper who measured perfectly still lands in the wrong size. It breaks a second way with stretch fabric, where a rib knit will sit on a body several inches larger than its flat measurement suggests and a stable cotton jersey will not. It breaks a third way on shape: two people who share a 40" chest can differ at the shoulder, the bicep and the waist, and one number cannot separate them.
It also inherits every problem in vanity sizing. When a label's letters drift over time or across sub-brands, a body number mapped through that label drifts with it.
Garment measurement
It breaks when there is nothing to compare. If a product publishes no measurements, the method is silent, and silence is the honest answer rather than a guessed size. It breaks a second way when the reference garment is wrong: a shirt you tolerate rather than like passes its own error straight into every match. It breaks a third way at the points of measure nobody publishes. Chest and body length are widely published; sleeve opening, bicep and shoulder seam frequently are not, so a comparison can be confident at the chest and blind at the arm.
And it breaks quietly if you forget tolerance. Two products whose published chests differ by 0.3" are, for practical purposes, the same width.
Which method suits which situation?
If you own a shirt you would buy again, garment measurement asks less of you and assumes less about you. Your ease preference is already encoded in the thing hanging in your wardrobe, so nothing has to be modelled. That is the case for garment-first sizing, and it is the approach this site is built around.
If you own nothing comparable, body measurement is the only route available. Use it, but treat the output as a range and check it against the brand's published garment measurements before ordering. If the brand publishes both charts, the garment chart is the one that describes what will arrive in the box.

What does ShirtMath do, and what does it not do?
ShirtMath sits entirely on the garment side. You photograph a shirt laid flat with a scale card, the scanner returns its flat measurements, and those measurements are matched against published garment measurements across the catalogue.
There is no body scanning of any kind, and none is planned as part of this. The scanner has limits worth stating plainly: roughly half of readings land within an inch of a tape, sleeve opening and bicep are the least reliable points of measure, and anything the system cannot read confidently is left blank instead of filled in with a guess. A blank is information. A fabricated number is not.
